ANTIHISTAMINE (an-tee-HIS-tah-meen)

Blocks the effects of histamines (ie, runny nose; sneezing; and itchy nose, throat, and eyes), which are released from cells in the body in response to an allergic reaction or a cold

ANTITUSSIVE (an-tee-TUSS-sive)

Suppresses the urge to cough, either through acting in the brain or on the nerves in the respiratory tract

DECONGESTANT (de-con-JESS-tant)

Reduces congestion that occurs when tissues become inflamed and swollen during colds or allergies, and makes breathing easier

DEXTROMETHORPHAN (dex-troe-meth-OR-fan)

The most widely used oral OTC antitussive

DIPHENHYDRAMINE (dye-fen-HYE-dra-meen)

An antihistamine and antitussive

DOXYLAMINE SUCCINATE (dox-IL-a-meen SUCKS-in-ate)
